FLOOD AR

3D geovisualisations for raising flood awareness

About the project

Method

1. 3D modelling of territory + flood data
2. Exporting images for interactive visualisations
3. On site experimentations with citizens, observed by researchers
4. Feedbacks from observation on interactive 3D geovisualisations potential

3D models from flood simulation on an area along the river Rhône were produced from 2D and 3D geodata (topography, buildings, vegetation) and flood simulated data (water height for a given flood).

Images were then exported for interactive visualisation by citizens on smartphone, tablets and through basic VR headsets.

Two public experiment were conducted in 2016 in Sablons (France). More than 100 participants attended one of the experiments. Observations and interviews with users were conducted by communications studies researchers so as to provide feedbacks on the potential of 3D geovisualisations displayed on mobile devices for raising flood awareness.
